How to get your L’s (Learner’s Permit) in Adelaide, South Australia (current rules)

1. Age

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for your car learner’s permit.

2. Theory / Knowledge Test

You need to pass a learner theory test. You have two options:

  • Complete the myLs course online, which includes learning material plus the theory test

  • Or take the theory test in person at a Service SA centre.

3. Identity Verification

You’ll need to provide evidence of your identity, have a photo taken, and set up any required accounts (e.g. mySA GOV) if using online services.

4. Fee

There is a fee for enrolment in myLs and for the learner permit itself.

5. Learner Permit Conditions

Once you have your L’s, you must follow conditions:

  • Drive only while supervised by a qualified supervising driver.
  • You must log a minimum number of supervised driving hours: 75 hours, which must include 15 hours at night.
  • Hold the permit for a minimum time: 12 months if you’re under 25; 6 months if you’re 25 or older.
  • Display L-plates, carry your permit, obey speed limits (including special limits under permit conditions), no alcohol or drug presence, etc.
