How to get your P’s (Provisional Licence) in Adelaide, South Australia (current rules)

In South Australia, provisional licences have two sub-stages: P1 and P2. You move through them before getting a full (unrestricted) licence.

1. Here’s how to get your P1, then P2:

Meet the Learner Permit Requirements

You must have held your learner’s permit for the required minimum time (12 months if under 25, 6 months if 25 or older) and completed your logbook with 75 hours (including 15 at night).

2. Hazard Perception Test (HPT)

Before progressing from L’s to P1, you must pass the Hazard Perception Test. This is a computer-based test that measures your ability to recognise and respond to potentially dangerous situations.

3. Practical Driving / On-Road Test or Assessment

You need to pass either a Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) with an authorised examiner, or do the Competency Based Training & Assessment (CBT&A) course.

4. Age for P1

You must be at least 17 years old to hold a P1 licence

5. Conditions on P1

While on P1, there are rules you must follow:

  • Display P-plates.
  • Zero blood alcohol or drug level.
  • Restrictions on speed, vehicle type etc.
  • Passenger and night-time restrictions if under 25: e.g. limits on carrying peer passengers aged 16-20 unless a qualified supervising driver is next to you; a night driving curfew (e.g. not driving between midnight-5am) for P1s under 25.

6. Upgrading to P2

After holding P1 for 1 year and being at least 18, you automatically move to P2 (if you satisfy conditions).

7. Full (Open) Licence

You need to have held P2 for two years, and be at least 20 years old (and meet all provisional stage requirements) to move to a full licence.
