Since you got your licence (assuming that was around ~2005 or earlier), there have been several significant changes in how SA does driver licensing. Some of the key shifts:

| Introduction of hazard perception test (HPT) | This is relatively new. Not required 20-odd years ago. Now compulsory before P1. |
| P1 / P2 stages and length | The provisional licence is now split into P1 and P2, with defined minimum durations (1 year P1, 2 years P2). In earlier times there might have been simpler provisional licence without the staged split, or different time requirements. |
| Restrictions for P1 (passenger, night) | More detailed restrictions now especially for younger P1 drivers: passenger restrictions (peers), night-time curfews, zero alcohol/drugs. These are stronger than older rules. |
| Digital / online options | Newer licences involve online courses (myLs), online hazard perception testing, digital log books / apps sometimes etc. These were not options back then. |
