Here are what examiners are looking for / what you must satisfy (in addition to the eligibility criteria above):

  • Good control of the vehicle: steering, braking, accelerating, gear changes (if manual), smoothness.
  • Awareness of and obeying road rules: speed limits, give way rules, road signs, signals, etc.
  • Safe observations: checking mirrors, blind spots, looking well ahead, defensive driving.
  • Ability to respond safely to hazards (hence why the hazard perception test is part of the process).
  • Use of indicators, observing other road users including pedestrians, cyclists.
  • Correct execution of manoeuvres if required (e.g. turns, parking, reversing depending on what the VORT examiner requires).
  • Following the vehicle types and speed restrictions that apply to P1 drivers.

Also you must satisfy all the conditions of your learner permit (good log book, minimum time etc) before you’re even allowed to attempt the practical test. Failing to have all those means you’re not eligible
